I’m bookmarking a couple more videos to watch.

First, Defcon released their teaser set of videos from this year’s con, including Adam Savage’s “Failure”.

Second, I saw a link to Marcus Ranum talking at TEDx MidAtlantic.

I had the opportunity to watch the first few minutes of the stream of Marcus Ranum’s talk at DojoCon 2009 but then had to go to a client site.  I was happy to see they posted the videos to UStream so I can go back and watch the rest.

• My phone – Bluetooth will be off, and the wifi never is on, so that’s good.  If I have to connect, 3G and mail on the phone will be primary.
• EEEPC – I just got an Asus EEEPC 1000HA, and I’ve been impressed so far.  I am considering loading an alternate OS or LiveCD image to an SD card and disabling my hard drive while I’m at Shmoocon.  I haven’t tested this yet, but I’m hoping I can disable the hard drive in the BIOS and boot from SD so that even if the system is compromised the hard disk would be out of play.

That’s it.  Toss in a book and some clothes, and I’m ready to roll.  Yee-haw.

If all goes well, I hope to bring back my thoughts to share here.

The next meeting of TampaBaySec will be Wednesday February 20th at 6pm.

If you haven’t come before, TampaBaySec is an informal gathering of information security professionals and those with an interest in infosec. We are the Tampa / St. Pete / West Central Florida initiative of the CitySec idea. There’s no formal anything to this beyond we liked the idea of CitySec and declared ourselves to be. No dues, no agenda, no worries. We just get together to talk shop and enjoy a couple hours of good conversation.

Now, if you’ve read this far, you are probably wondering where we meet. Good question. The last few meetings have been at Starbucks which has been good for talking, but this month we are looking for somewhere with food and drink available. The place hasn’t been nailed down, but may be Lee Roy Selmon’s by International Mall & TIA. Check back in the next couple days for confirmation or shoot me an email to charles@serverguys.com to verify.

Update: As was suggested, we’ll be meeting at the Panera at Westshore & Kennedy in Tampa. The venue is a little more flexible to accommodate however many stop by.

The first meeting of 2008 for TampaBaySec will be Wednesday January 16th at 6pm.

As before we will meet at the Starbucks at Kennedy & Westshore.

The second meeting of TampaBaySec is being planned for Tuesday September 18th at 6pm. We are going to try out the 3rd Tuesday of the month as a meeting date and see what kind of response we get.

In case you don’t know about CitySec (which brought about TampaBaySec), here’s the original post to CitySec titled “What Is A CitySec Meetup?“:

CitySec meetups are gatherings of information security professionals. Are you an information security professional? You are if you (ever) write firewall rules, read log files, apply patches, follow Bugtraq, help select products, rack and stack security appliances, find vulnerabilities, write secure code, test other people’s code, write policies, manage people who do any of these things, assist people who do any of these things, or just want to one day do any of these things.

CitySec meetups are like any other professional society meeting, except:

• There’s no professional society

• There’s no membership

• There’s no dues

• There’s no cover charge

• There’s no corporate sponsorshop

• There’s no vendor pitches

• There’s no requirement to RSVP

• There’s no fixed agenda

• They’re publically announced and open to all comers

The rule of thumb is, no more structure than is absolutely necessary to get people into a room (where “room” usually means “bar”): if structure (like “name tags” or “surveys”) would even possibly prevent one person from attending the meeting, don’t use it.

Frankly, I like that attitude so we are trying to get some traction here in central Florida. Please leave a comment here or on the CitySec thread if you have any questions or suggestions about date or venue.
